• The single-dotted wave spans two major biogeographic realms, occurring across the Western Palearctic and the Nearctic. It is widespread in western, southern and central Europe, showing a broad continental distribution. In the north its range pushes up to southern Scandinavia, while to the east it reaches the Urals, marking the outer limits of its European range.
• The single-dotted wave inhabits almost every island in the Mediterranean Sea, demonstrating its affinity for coastal habitats. Beyond the islands it is also recorded in Morocco and north-western Turkey, extending its presence into the Caucasus and Transcaucasia. From northern Iran its distribution continues eastward to Afghanistan and further into Central Asia, showing a considerable east-west spread.
• In the southern part of its range the subspecies dimidiata antitaurica replaces the nominal form, occurring specifically in Cyprus, Turkey and the Levant. The nominal dimidiata dimidiata is absent from these areas but can be found further north, including Canada and the most northern regions of the United States of America. This geographic substitution means the two forms occupy separate territories.
