• A single variegated lady beetle eats up to 5,000 aphids in its lifetime — enough to protect an entire crop from collapse. • In autumn, thousands of variegated lady beetles cluster together in caves, attics, and tree hollows in a behaviour called hibernaculum formation — a living insulation blanket where they breathe as one.
