• Syritta pipiens stays close to the ground, rarely rising above one metre as it darts among blossoms. This low-level flight lets it move quickly through the dense vegetation of farms, gardens and urban parks where flowers are abundant. Because it feeds on nectar and pollen, it is most often seen hovering just above the blossoms it visits. Its habit of skimming the surface makes it a conspicuous part of the flower-visiting community.
• When a male spots a potential mate, it launches a rapid surge that maintains an acceleration of about 500 cm/s² until just before landing. The male points its head at the target and arcs swiftly around the other fly, a manoeuvre that ends in a sharp dart toward the settled female. This high-speed chase is aided by motion-camouflage, allowing the male to approach without being easily detected.
• The larva ends in a tiny false head at its rear, a decoy that draws attacks away from its real head while it feeds on rotting organic material.
