• The salt marsh moth is most commonly observed during the warm months, with adults on the wing from May through August across the bulk of its range. In the subtropical zones of southern Florida and southern Texas, however, the species does not pause, remaining active throughout the entire year.
• Adult salt marsh moths display a modest wingspan of 4.5 to 6.8 cm, giving them a noticeable but not large profile for a night-flying insect. Their forewings are white and may carry a variable pattern of black spots, while the hindwings differ between sexes, being yellow-orange in males and white in females. Both sexes retain three or four black spots or blotches on the hindwings, adding a distinctive pattern to their overall appearance.
• Unlike many insects, the salt marsh moth shows no adverse reaction to pyrrolizidine alkaloids, toxic compounds found in numerous plant families such as borage, legume, dogbane, orchid and in the Senecioneae and Eupatorieae tribes of the aster family. The moth's specialised taste receptors render it insensitive to these chemicals, and it can even detoxify them.
• Each thoracic and abdominal segment bears a few rows of orange or black warts. The caterpillar also carries a single tiny white dot on both sides of every segment, creating a dotted outline along its body. It is covered in soft setae that grow in several tufts per segment, with a few longer hairs toward the rear. The larva can reach about 5 cm in length and shows a wide colour range from pale yellow to rusty orange-brown or dark brownish-black.
