Varied Tit

Fascinating facts about the Varied Tit

• In 1845 Dutch zoologist Coenraad Jacob Temminck and German ornithologist Hermann Schlegel described the varied tit and gave it the scientific name Parus varius.
• The bird’s wing length is 6.0–7.8 cm, and it lives in mixed forests of Japanese larch and bamboo on mountain slopes.
• One subspecies, S. v. orii from the Daitō Islands, vanished around 1940, reminding us that isolated island populations can disappear within a single human generation if their habitats are altered.
• Since the 2010s scientists have reshuffled its family tree twice, first moving it to the resurrected genus Poecile in 2005, then placing it in its own genus Sittiparus in 2013, illustrating how DNA studies can rewrite centuries-old taxonomy.
