Fascinating facts about the Lilac-breasted Roller
- Weighing just 104 grams yet stretching 36-38 cm long, including an 8-9 cm tail streamer, this bird packs a punch. Its wings span only 50-58 cm, but that compact wing-area fuels acrobatic flights over savannas. Such a lightweight, yet powerfully built frame lets the roller dart from perch to prey.
- When it comes to nesting, the lilac-breasted roller claims a hollowed-out cavity about 5 m (16 ft) above ground, sometimes even stealing a side of a termite mound. Females lay two to four eggs in southern Africa and three to four in Somalia, and both parents share incubation for 22-24 days.
- During breeding, a male roller rockets upward to a staggering 69-144 m before swooping down in dramatic dives, all while emitting harsh, discordant cries. This sky-high display not only advertises territory but also warns rivals and predators that the pair will fiercely defend their nest, even taking on raptors.
- A master perch-hunter, the roller scans the ground from high perches, including the backs of large herbivores, before diving to snatch insects, spiders, scorpions and even small birds. When grassland fires flare, it joins Taita fiscals, pale flycatchers, kites and storks, swooping over roads to capture fleeing prey.
- The species thrives from sea level up to over 2,000 m across eastern and southern Africa, inhabiting open savannahs, scattered woodlands, and even sub-desert steppe.
