• A bighorn sheep's horns can weigh 14 kilograms—heavier than the entire skeleton of a large dog. Rams grow these spiralling battering rams over 8 years, adding a new ring each year like a tree. During rutting season, two rams will hurl themselves at each other at 40 kilometres per hour, their skulls absorbing impacts that would shatter a human spine, then do it again 20 times in a single clash. The thick bone between their horns is double-walled and acts as a shock absorber no helmet engineer has fully replicated.
• Bighorn sheep navigate slopes so steep they seem drawn by gravity, yet their hooves work like climbing holds. The soft, rubbery centre of each hoof grips rock like a gecko's toe pad, letting them stand on ledges only 10 centimetres wide where predators cannot follow. Wolves and lions give up before reaching them. Humans studying these sheep have died falling from the exact terrain the animals treat as highway.
• In 1888, a single shipment of California bighorns crossed from the Sierra Nevada to New Mexico—and those sheep were carrying a respiratory parasite invisible to the naked eye. Within decades, wild populations across the West crashed by up to 95 per cent. A disease carried by domestic livestock, introduced through just a handful of animals, rewrote the geography of an entire species. Today, every population recovery effort must keep domestic sheep away like a quarantine.
• At elevations above 3,000 metres where temperatures drop below freezing most months, bighorn ewes give birth to a single lamb in spring while still eating dried grass and lichen. The lamb gains 200 grams per week until it can follow its mother across rock faces at three weeks old. A lamb that falls during this window dies; there is no second chance. About one in five do not survive their first summer.
• Ram horns form a social registry visible from a hundred metres away: the horn curl's size and symmetry signal how long a ram has lived, how well he fed, whether he survived disease. Younger rams recognize dominance instantly and yield. This means fights rarely escalate to deadly collisions because one ram can read the other's full history written in calcium and keratin before they clash. Combat becomes negotiation.
