Two-tone Fingerfin

Fascinating facts about the Two-tone Fingerfin

• From the windswept shores of Walvis Bay to the warm waters of Maputo, the two-tone fingerfin patrols a stretch of coastline that spans 13 degrees of latitude in the southern African subtropics.
• When a juvenile reaches just 5 cm long, its silvery sheen with orange fins flips to the adult’s brown body marked by a bright white patch under the eyes and a line of five white spots along the side.
• At a maximum length of 40 cm and weight of 3 kg, this fish hits maturity at 25 cm, timing its breeding season to the summer months when reef prey are most abundant.
• Living on rocky reefs and sandy flats down to 240 m, the fingerfin hunts crabs, amphipods, bivalves and other small invertebrates, carving out a niche that reduces food competition with neighboring predators.
• Although anglers rarely snag it on a hook, spearfishermen find it relatively easy to capture, highlighting a subtle but direct link between this modest reef dweller and local fisheries.

About the Two-tone Fingerfin

The twotone fingerfin, Chirodactylus brachydactylus, glides along the subtropical reefs of southern Africa, its body a muted brown that lightens beneath the belly. A striking white patch crowns the area below its eyes, and a neat line of five white spots runs along its lateral line, giving the fish its common name. Juveniles wear a silvery sheen with vivid orange anal and paired fins, shedding this flamboyance as they grow past about 5 cm to adopt the adult’s more cryptic palette. Reaching up to 40 cm and 3 kg, they mature at 25 cm and head to the spawning grounds each summer, where their small mouths and fleshy lips betray a diet of benthic invertebrates. They stalk crabs, amphipods, bivalves and other creatures hidden among the rocky reefs and sandy margins that they call home, diving to depths of 240 m but often lingering in shallow rock pools as juveniles. A surprising facet of their ecology is the subtle niche partitioning that allows them to share reef predator assemblages with minimal competition, each species carving out its own dietary slice of the reef’s bounty. Yet even as larger predators such as the santer seabream, red steenbras, scotsman and yellow-belly rockcod keep them in check, the fingerfin remains a relatively elusive target for anglers, more often yielding to spearfishers than to hook and line, hinting at a quiet resilience that belies its modest size,
