• The lime swallowtail holds the record for the briefest adult life of any swallowtail: males die after just four days and females survive only a week. In captivity at Riyadh the adult stage lasted 4 to 6 days, averaging 5.1 days, confirming its fleeting nature.
• Unlike most swallowtails, the lime butterfly is completely tailless and still spans a respectable 80-100 mm across its wings. This combination of a broad wing surface without the characteristic tail tips makes it a fast, low-flying flyer that can dart close to the ground, helping it escape predators.
• Papilio demoleus is perhaps the most widely distributed swallowtail in the world, ranging from Syria and the Arabian Peninsula across South Asia, Southeast Asia, Australia, the Pacific islands and now the Caribbean. Its presence on islands such as Mahé in the Seychelles (first recorded November 2016) and Hispaniola shows how quickly it can colonise new lands, highlighting its adaptability to diverse habitats from savannahs to urban gardens.
• Temperature drives its breeding speed: near the equator nine generations have been recorded, while warm-tempered China supports five generations a year. In ideal laboratory conditions a full generation can finish in just over 30 days, and in the field it ranges from 26 to 59 days. adults are especially abundant during and after monsoons.
• The lime butterfly's caterpillars feast on a wide array of citrus and related plants, cultivated lime, orange, lemon, as well as curry tree and bael, and even on some Fabaceae species in Australia and PNG. This broad diet makes it a serious economic pest; in India, Pakistan, Iraq and the Middle East the larvae can strip young citrus trees of foliage, threatening nurseries.
