• A caterpillar that looks exactly like bird droppings isn't trying to be invisible — it's advertising itself as inedible. The lime swallowtail caterpillar mimics white and brown splattered waste so perfectly that predators avoid it. But the moment it grows wings, it becomes one of the most recognisable butterflies in Asia and beyond, with navy-black wings and electric-blue patches that flash iridescent in sunlight. The switch from 'don't eat me' to 'look at me' happens in the cocoon, where the entire visual strategy flips.
• Since the 1970s, the lime swallowtail has invaded 50+ countries across Africa, the Middle East, and Europe — a sprawl driven entirely by humans shipping infected citrus fruit. A single egg-laying female can destroy 80% of a lemon or lime tree's leaves in just days, turning a nursery into skeleton branches. In warm tropical climates, the entire life cycle from egg to egg-laying adult takes just three weeks, allowing up to 8 generations per year. This speed is why a single escaped butterfly can become an agricultural catastrophe in a single season.
