• A sun fly's eyes wrap nearly 360 degrees around its head — they can see backwards without turning. This isn't just vision; it's a predator's early-warning system. While hunting smaller insects in wet grasslands, they spot threats from every angle simultaneously, giving them milliseconds to dodge or dive. Most prey insects can only see what's in front of them.
• Male sun flies hover in the same spot for hours, their wings beating 200 times per second, waiting for females to pass through their territory. The sound they produce — a high-pitched whine — is their calling card across European wetlands. Females navigate by listening to where the males are loudest, turning sound into a map through tall grass they can barely see through.
• Unlike most flies, sun fly larvae are aquatic hunters that live in waterlogged soil and shallow pools for months.
