Teira Batfish

Fascinating facts about the Teira Batfish

• Juvenile teira batfish masquerade as floating leaves, blending into seaweed mats and debris. Their brownish colour and flattened shape let them hide from visual hunters while they gather in tight aggregations among drifting material. As they grow, the elongated pelvic and dorsal fin rays stretch out, turning the leaf-like disguise into a striking silhouette. This life-stage trick shows how the species uses its environment for survival at every size.
• Across the Indo-West Pacific, Platax teira inhabits a swath from the Red Sea and East Africa all the way to Papua New Guinea, stretching north to the Ryukyu Islands and south to Australia. This broad range means the fish can be found in both shallow coastal reefs and deeper offshore waters, often hanging out among floating seaweed, debris, and artificial reefs.
• A teira batfish can grow, reaching a maximum published total length of 70 cm (28 in). It schools beneath drifting Sargassum. Its size also means hobbyists quickly outgrow the modest tanks they buy them for, as the fish can swell to a 24-inch adult.
• The teira batfish is an omnivore that dines on plankton, sessile invertebrates, small mobile critters, and marine algae.
• From the Red Sea to New Zealand, Platax teira spans an oceanic stretch, reaching from the Red Sea and East Africa all the way to Papua New Guinea, north to the Ryukyu Islands and south to Australia. It even pops up in the Bay of Islands in New Zealand and has been sighted twice recently off Turkey and Israel in the Mediterranean.
