Fascinating facts about the Tarsier

• Their eyes are so enormous that each one weighs more than their entire brain — and they can't move them side to side. Instead, tarsiers rotate their head 180 degrees, like an owl, to see what's beside them. This trade-off evolved because their forward-facing, bulging eyes give them the predator's precision needed to snatch insects mid-air in pitch-black forest.
• A tarsier's ankle bone is stretched so long it's half the length of their tibia, acting like a biological catapult. When they leap, they can launch their 120-gram body up to 2 metres through the air — equivalent to a human jumping the length of three cars. Their feet grip branches with fingernails sharp enough to pierce skin.
• At night, a tarsier's calls sound like electronic chirps and ultrasonic whistles — frequencies so high that humans can't hear most of them without a spectrograph. They duet with partners to defend territory in a 4-hectare forest patch, broadcasting identity and ownership through sound no human ear ever detects.
• Tarsiers are the smallest primates on Earth, weighing as much as a chicken egg, yet they hunt in a way no other primate does: they stalk like a cat. Each step is deliberate and silent. When prey moves, they lock onto it with both eyes forward and pounce with a predatory precision their larger cousins abandoned millions of years ago.
• Their gestation period is 6 months — longer than any other primate their size — because babies are born nearly mature, furred and with eyes open. Within hours they're clinging to branches. This strategy trades the energy cost of pregnancy against the danger of defenceless young in a rainforest where nocturnal predators hunt constantly.
