Furry-eared Dwarf Lemur

Fascinating facts about the Furry-eared Dwarf Lemur

• Mistletoes act as keystone plants in Ranomafana, offering fruit, nectar, and leaves to a parade of forest animals. Among the visitors were Crossley's dwarf lemurs, recorded eating mistletoe fruit alongside mouse lemurs and birds. By feeding on these epiphytes, the lemurs gain a staple food source when other foods are scarce, highlighting how a single plant family can sustain multiple species and buffer the forest against seasonal food gaps.
• All living lemurs, including the furry-eared dwarf, trace back to a single colonizing primate that arrived on Madagascar over 60 million years ago. That ancient arrival set the stage for the island's entire lemur radiation, meaning every modern species carries a genetic echo of that lone ancestor.
• Crossley's dwarf lemurs hibernate when food runs low. Their bodies then swing through extreme temperature changes.
• Since the 1950s, Madagascar has shed native forest at a staggering rate, losing an estimated 200,000 hectares (nearly 500,000 acres) each year.
