Fascinating facts about the Tardigrade

• A tardigrade can survive 30 years without water by entering cryptobiosis — a state where its metabolism drops to 0.01% of normal and its body loses 99% of its water content. Scientists revived one in 2021 after three decades of freeze-dried suspension, and it reproduced normally. This makes them the closest thing nature has built to a pause button on life.
• In 2007, Russia launched tardigrades into space on a Foton capsule with no protection. They orbited Earth for 10 days exposed directly to the vacuum, radiation, and temperature swings of -150°C to +50°C. When they landed, 68% were still alive and capable of reproducing. No other animal survives naked space.
• Tardigrades can withstand 1,200 times the pressure of Earth's deepest ocean trenches and survive radiation doses 5,000 times higher than what kills humans. Their cells produce antioxidants and proteins that shield DNA from damage before it happens — a repair system so efficient that labs now study it to protect human astronauts.
• Under an electron microscope, a tardigrade looks like a microscopic bear with eight stubby legs and a barrel-shaped body roughly 0.3mm long — small enough that 2,000 of them could fit on the tip of a pencil. Despite their size, they have a brain with about 302 nerve cells, a mouth with a sharp stylet they use to pierce plant cells, and claws on each leg to grip moss fibers.
• A single moss patch the size of a postage stamp can house 20,000 tardigrades, yet we didn't know they existed until 1773 because they're invisible to the naked eye. Today we've discovered over 1,300 species living everywhere from Antarctic ice to rainforest canopies to hot springs, surviving in places where almost nothing else can.
