Fascinating facts about the Sunburst Anemone

• The sunburst anemone can reach a diameter of up to 25 cm, far exceeding the size of its close relative the aggregating anemone. Most individuals are about half that size, averaging 12 cm across. Its column, when extended, is twice as long as it is wide, giving it a tall, cup-shaped profile. This combination of width and height makes it noticeably larger than the aggregating species.
• When the tide recedes the sunburst anemone's column gathers shell fragments and other particles, folding into a hard, encrusted ball that conceals it from predators. This coating also acts as a shield against intense solar radiation and helps prevent the animal from drying out during exposure. By camouflaging itself in this way, the anemone can remain hidden in the intertidal cracks and crevices where it lives.
• Unlike the highly clonal aggregating anemone that forms dense groups of genetically identical clones, the sunburst anemone is non-clonal and lives alone. This independent lifestyle contrasts sharply with the aggregating species, which is almost always found in tight clusters of clones.
• As its range shifts north, the sunburst anemone encounters the dinoflagellate Breviolum muscatinei, a symbiotic algae that previously only partnered with other anemone species. This new association is a nutritional exchange: the anemone receives sugars produced by photosynthesis while the algae gain metabolic nutrients and a protected, sunlit home.
• When a genetically different neighbour approaches, the sunburst anemone unfurls specialised white-tipped acrorhagi that are packed with stinging cells. The nematocysts on these tips inject toxins into the ectoderm of the intruder, causing tissue necrosis that forces the rival to retreat.
