• A single sunburst anemone can clone itself into a genetically identical copy — splitting down the middle to create two anemones where one existed before. Some colonies you see clinging to rocks aren't families; they're thousands of copies of the same individual, all descended from one ancestor that might have arrived 100 years ago. This is cloning so efficient that a sunburst anemone population can double without a single fertilised egg.
• The sunburst anemone's column is covered in adhesive tentacles that trap sediment particles — sand grains, shell fragments, bits of algae — and glues them to its body like a living suit of armour. As the anemone grows, it rebuilds this camouflage coat, shedding old pieces and collecting new ones. By disguising itself as part of the rocky intertidal zone, it becomes nearly invisible to predators that hunt by sight.
• When the tide recedes and the anemone is left exposed to air and UV radiation, it retracts into a sealed ball roughly the size of a marble and stops all feeding. It can survive up to 8 months out of water — longer than many fish can stay alive in water. This gives the sunburst anemone access to real estate in the harshest zone of the intertidal, where competitors that need constant moisture cannot survive.
• Sunburst anemones battle for territory using nematocysts — microscopic harpoons fired from specialised cells that inject venom into rival anemones. They have a deliberate aggression hierarchy: larger colonies win fights and claim better feeding spots. • Each sunburst anemone feeds by dangling a crown of up to 200 tentacles into the water column, catching plankton and tiny crustaceans that drift past.
