• A striped dolphin can click its jaw shut 1,200 times per second — faster than any mammal's jaw can physically move. These clicks bounce off fish and squid in the dark depths, painting a sonar picture so detailed the dolphin can distinguish a sardine from a anchovy in total darkness. Each click uses muscles so precisely tuned that a single nerve fires at millisecond intervals, a feat neuroscientists are still working to understand.
• Striped dolphins live in groups of up to 10,000 individuals — so dense that from above, the ocean surface looks like it's boiling. These super-pods hunt cooperatively, herding fish into tight balls before taking turns feeding. • The newborn arrives after a 12-month pregnancy and nurses for up to 3 years while learning hunting techniques from its mother. Today, they're abundant again, but they're among the first casualties of ocean warming; as water temperatures rise, their prey species relocate, and the dolphins must follow or starve. They've already shifted their range northward by hundreds of kilometres in the past three decades.
