• A cat-sized marsupial hunts at night with eyes so sensitive it can spot a moving mouse in near-total darkness — yet it's been extinct on mainland Australia for over a decade in most of its former range. The spotted-tailed quoll, once common across eastern forests, has vanished from 99% of its historical territory in just 200 years. Feral cats, which arrived with European settlers, proved a predator it never evolved to escape.
• Unlike most marsupials, the spotted-tailed quoll is a solo hunter with the metabolism of a sprinter — it must eat 10–15% of its body weight every night, stalking possums, gliders, and birds through the darkness. A 3 kg quoll needs roughly 350 grams of meat daily, forcing it to be one of Australia's most active and aggressive hunters after sunset. Mainland populations number fewer than 500 individuals, clinging to remote southeastern forests. The species is locked in a race between extinction and reintroduction — conservationists now breed captive quolls to rewild fenced sanctuaries, betting that a second generation of isolation from feral predators might let an ancient hunter reclaim its forest nights.
