Fascinating facts about the Sperm Whale

• At 230 decibels, a sperm whale's click is the loudest sound any animal has ever made — louder than a jet engine, powerful enough to stun a giant squid before the whale even finishes diving. Their nose is a living sonar amplifier, and they can pinpoint a squid the size of a football from a kilometre away in pitch black.
• A sperm whale's brain weighs 9 kilograms — the heaviest brain on Earth, three times heavier than a human's. Inside their massive head, which makes up one-third of their body length, lies a mysterious organ called the spermaceti that may fine-tune sound waves or help with buoyancy during dives 2,000 metres deep.
• They hunt in the aphotic zone where zero sunlight reaches — a darkness so complete that eyes become almost useless. Instead, sperm whales echolocate like bats, but on a whale-sized scale: a single click travels through water to bounce off prey and return as a three-dimensional acoustic image their brain reconstructs in real time.
• Female sperm whales live in stable family groups called nurseries for their entire lives, while males leave home in their teens and drift alone across oceans, sometimes spending years in solitude hunting in polar seas. When males return to breed, they fight other males with head-butts so violent they can fracture skulls, battling for dominance in waters where no other animal challenges them.
• Nineteenth-century whalers hunted sperm whales for spermaceti oil — a waxy substance from their heads used to light lamps across Europe and America. The species nearly vanished: from roughly 1.1 million whales in 1850 down to 300,000 today. Their recovery remains fragile, threatened now by ship strikes and ocean noise that scrambles the very echolocation system that makes them apex hunters of the deep.
