Fascinating facts about the Sperm Whale

• Sperm whales can plunge to 2,250 metres (7,380 ft), making them the third-deepest diving mammal on Earth, only behind the southern elephant seal and Cuvier's beaked whale. While down there they fire clicks that reach a source level of 236 decibels (re 1 µPa m), the loudest sound any animal produces.
• Weighing on average 7.08 kg (15.6 lb), the sperm whale brain is the largest known of any modern or extinct animal, with the smallest recorded at 6.4 kg and the biggest at 9.2 kg. That mass is more than five times the weight of a human brain and fills about 8,000 cm³ of skull space. Yet the whale's encephalization quotient is lower than many dolphins and apes, reminding us that brain size alone does not dictate intelligence.
• Mature male sperm whales average 16 metres (52 ft) long, with heads that can be up to one-third of that length, while females top out around 12 metres (39 ft). A 18-metre (59-ft) male is estimated to weigh 57 tonnes (63 short tons), whereas the largest recorded female measured 12.5 metres (41 ft) and weighed about 24 tonnes (26 short tons). This extreme sexual dimorphism, males being 30-50 % longer and three times as massive, means bulls dominate the deep-water hunting arena, while females stay in tighter social groups to protect calves.
• The sperm whale's intestine can stretch beyond 300 metres (980 ft), the longest of any animal, and its multi-chambered stomach can hold up to 18,000 squid beaks. Those beaks sometimes pass through the digestive tract and end up in the hind-gut, where they help form ambergris, a solid waxy waste that beachcombers prize for perfume making. This link between deep-sea feeding and a high-value product shows how the whale's biology directly fuels a tiny but lucrative human market.
• Female sperm whales give birth only every four to twenty years, then nurse their calves for more than a decade. Calves stay with their mothers and other females in tight groups that cooperate to protect the young.
