• A spectacled caiman's eyes glow bright red or orange when you shine a torch at them at night—a reflection from a mirror-like layer behind their retinas called the tapetum lucidum. The same adaptation lets them spot prey 10 metres away in total darkness, turning every flooded forest into their personal hunting ground.
