About the Tentacled Snake

The tentacled snake (Erpeton tentaculatum) is a sleek, rear-fanged aquatic reptile that spends its entire life concealed in the silty waters of Southeast Asia. Measuring roughly 50 to 90 cm (20 to 35 in), it displays two distinct colour phases, striped or blotched, ranging from dark gray or brown to a light tan, each pattern blending seamlessly with the murky depths of lakes, rice paddies, slow-moving streams, and even brackish or sea water such as Cambodia’s silt-laden Tonlé Sap. Its most arresting feature are the twin mechanosensory tentacles perched on the tip of its snout, a trait unique among snakes, which help detect the faint vibrations of fish swimming nearby. A master of underwater ambush, the snake anchors itself with its tail and adopts an inverted “J” shape, remaining motionless until a fish drifts into a narrow strike zone beneath its head. Using a rapid, downward thrust, it creates a subtle water disturbance that triggers the prey’s C-start escape reflex, coaxing the fish to turn toward the predator. Anticipating this reflex, the snake snaps forward, often seizing the fish by the head before it can correct its course. Its rear-positioned, partially grooved fangs inject a fish-specific venom, and the young are born live underwater via ovoviviparity, allowing them to begin hunting the moment they surface. The tentacled snake can remain submerged for up to 30 minutes, emerging only to breathe before slipping back into the shadows of its murky realm, a living illustration of evolutionary precision.
