• A southern right whale's head is one-quarter the length of its entire body — roughly 5.5 metres of pure blubber and baleen plates. Whalers called them the 'right' whale to hunt because they floated when dead, packed more oil than any other species, and moved slowly enough to chase in wooden boats. That massive head is why: it's a living oil tanker, holding up to 27% of the whale's body weight in blubber alone, making them the fattiest animals on Earth by proportion.
• Southern right whales migrate 16,000 kilometres round-trip each year between Antarctic feeding grounds and sub-tropical breeding waters — one of the longest journeys of any mammal. In 1935, fewer than 100 remained alive after 300 years of industrial whaling killed over 100,000.
