• Only a hand-span tall, the southern pudú stands just 35-45 cm at the shoulder, about the length of a school ruler, and weighs 6.4-13.4 kg, making it the third smallest deer on Earth. Its antlers are a mere 5.3-9 cm long, curving back like a mountain goat's. This tiny size lets it slip through dense understory and hide in narrow tunnels, a lifesaving tactic when predators stalk or fires blaze, but it also means each individual carries a huge share of the species' genetic legacy.
