• At 3.3 kilograms — the weight of a newborn human — the southern pudú is the smallest deer species on Earth. Their legs are thinner than a pencil and only 5 centimetres thick at the thigh. Yet they leap 1.5 metres straight up when startled, clearing dense rainforest undergrowth in a single bound. That's like a human jumping over a single-storey building.
• Male southern pudús grow two tiny spike-like antlers, never longer than 3 centimetres, that they keep for life and never shed. These aren't weapons — pudús are born solitary and defend nothing. The antlers are pure evolutionary leftover, a genetic whisper from ancestors who fought over mates millions of years ago. Today's males use them for nothing but looking slightly fiercer.
• Listen to a southern pudú alarm call and you'll hear a sharp whistle that sounds like a human's surprised gasp. They use this exact sound to warn other pudús of danger — jaguars, pumas, or humans — in the fragmented rainforests of Chile and Argentina. A single pudú's cry can trigger a domino effect of warnings through the forest, even between groups that never meet.
• Southern pudús are one of the only deer species that doesn't form herds or lasting pairs. Each animal holds a tiny territory, sometimes no larger than 4 hectares, and meets others only to breed. They leave no trails, make no beds, and live almost invisibly in temperate rainforest — so invisible that biologists still don't know their true population size anywhere in their range.
• A southern pudú's stomach is a specialised fermentation chamber that breaks down tough rainforest leaves and bark that would poison most other animals. Their digestive system is so efficient they can survive on leaves most herbivores would starve eating.
