• A green ringtail's fur reflects light so efficiently that it glows emerald under UV rays — a trait shared with only a handful of mammals on Earth, and one biologists didn't confirm until 2017. The glow serves no known purpose yet, making it one of nature's stranger unsolved questions.
• Green ringtails eat toxic leaves that would kill most mammals within hours. Their stomach bacteria have evolved to break down plant poisons faster than their body absorbs them — a chemical arms race that took millions of years to win and still limits them to a handful of plant species in their rainforest home.
• Unlike most possums, green ringtails are strictly solitary. A mother raises a single joey roughly once every two years, and adults spend their entire lives in separate territories never larger than 2 hectares. They communicate through high-pitched calls that carry through dense canopy at night — their only social contact.
