• A diademed sifaka can leap 10 metres horizontally between trees — the length of a school bus — using hind legs that are twice as muscular as its arms. This lopsided anatomy makes them hopeless on flat ground; they move through rainforest canopy with the explosive power of a gymnast, but walk upright on the forest floor like a toddler in a moon suit, arms raised for balance. Evolution built them for one world: the vertical maze of Madagascar's eastern rainforest.
• Their white face-fur splays outward like a dandelion when they're alarmed, and this 'diadem'—the crown of longer hairs on their head—doubles in flare-up size to warn rivals: I am here, this is my territory, and I am not moving. Combined with their piercing yellow eyes and the fact they weigh just 6–7 kg, the display is precision intimidation in a body barely larger than a house cat.
• Diademed sifakas are one of the few primates where females outrank males in every hierarchy. A mother will eat first at a fruit tree, breed with any male she chooses, and move the group wherever she decides. This matriarchy is vanishingly rare among primates and suggests that in Madagascar's rainforest, the energy demands of raising offspring in a harsh environment gave mothers evolutionary veto power.
• Fewer than 10,000 exist in the wild today, confined to a fragmented 9,000 square kilometres of Madagascar's northeastern rainforest. That's smaller than Cyprus. Logging, farming, and a cyclone in 2017 that stripped their habitat have pushed them toward the edge; they cannot survive outside rainforest, cannot breed in captivity reliably, and have no natural predators except snakes and eagles—the real threat is the chainsaw.
• Their diet is leaves, not fruit—an unpopular choice among primates, which is why they've evolved a four-chambered stomach like a cow to digest tough vegetation. But leaves are seasonally scarce and low-energy, so they've become hyperefficient: they sit motionless for hours, moving only to find the next patch of food, burning calories like a creature half their size. In a rainforest that looks lush, they're actually constantly hungry.
