Their small body loses heat fast, so they spend dawn and dusk in frantic feeding bursts, cramming enough grass into their stomachs in just a few hours to survive the frigid nights. • Southern mountain cavies live in colonies of up to 50 individuals that share a warren system — interconnected burrow networks they don't dig themselves but inherit from previous generations and maintain for centuries.
