- Bat-eared foxes eat almost nothing but insects, a diet no other canid shares. Their meals are dominated by harvester termites, which can make up 80-90% of what they consume, and they get all the water they need from these bugs, never sipping from ponds. This extreme insectivory lets them control termite populations that farmers label pests, turning the fox into a natural pest-manager for African savannas.
- Its jaw holds the most teeth of any non-marsupial land mammal, between 46 and 50 total, with up to five lower molars and four upper molars, far more than any other canid. A step-like protrusion on the lower jaw anchors a huge digastric muscle, letting the fox chew five times per second. These dental tricks let it crush countless tiny insects quickly.
- Each ear stretches 11-13 cm (4.3-5.1 in), about the length of a standard ruler, acting like built-in radiators. The huge surface area radiates heat, keeping the fox cool in scorching savanna sun, while also funneling sound to pinpoint hidden termites. Their ears therefore double as climate control and a high-tech listening device.
- Families roam home ranges from just 0.3 km² up to 3.5 km² (0.12-1.35 sq mi), yet they often share multiple dens with several entrances and tunnels. By hunting together, up to 15 individuals can feed on a single termite mound without fighting, harvesting more insects than solitary hunters could on the same ground.
- Males do most of the parenting: after a 60-70 day pregnancy, the female nurses pups for 14-15 weeks, then the dad takes over grooming, defending, huddling, chaperoning, and even carrying the young between dens. This role reversal links male care directly to pup survival.
