Fascinating facts about the Southern Giraffe

• A giraffe's heart weighs 11 kilograms — roughly the same as a newborn human — and pumps blood up a 2-meter neck against gravity alone. To keep blood from pooling in their legs when they bend to drink, they have one-way valves in their veins and elastic ligaments that act like a tourniquet. A giraffe can lower its head to ground level for only seconds before dizziness sets in, which is why they rarely drink and can go weeks without water.
• Giraffes don't have vocal cords that produce sound humans can hear, but they communicate in infrasound — frequencies so low they travel through savanna grass undetected by predators' ears. Mothers and calves 'talk' to each other across kilometres using calls pitched below 20 hertz, a frequency their tall bodies are physically optimised to both create and sense. We only discovered this in the 1980s because the signals exist entirely outside human hearing.
• When a baby giraffe is born, it drops 2 metres to the ground to shock its lungs into their first breath. Calves weigh 45 kilograms at birth — roughly the size of an adult human — and within an hour they stand and nurse. By their first birthday, a calf has grown to 3 metres tall and can outrun most predators, a survival gamble that only works because giraffes mature faster than their predators expect.
• A giraffe's tongue is 45 centimetres long and prehensile enough to strip leaves from trees while avoiding thorns that would shred a human mouth. They can consume up to 35 kilograms of leaves daily, creating a moving ecosystem: insects, birds, and small mammals follow giraffes through the savanna to feast on insects flushed from high branches. In this way, a single giraffe shapes the survival odds of dozens of other species.
• Southern giraffes were hunted to fewer than 100 individuals by the 1960s — a bottleneck so severe that today every living southern giraffe is descended from a single genetic lineage. Over 60 years of protection, their population has rebounded to around 47,000, but this entire regional subspecies carries the DNA fingerprint of near-extinction. They are a living archive of what recovery looks like, and what we risk losing if conservation pauses.
