• A large hairy armadillo can dig a burrow 2 metres deep in hard ground in under an hour, using claws that move faster than a human can follow. Their front legs are powered by muscles that dwarf the rest of their body — a single forelimb contains more muscle mass than many small mammals weigh. They excavate not to hide, but to hunt: the soil is where their prey lives, and speed underground means more insects caught before they scatter.
• When threatened, a large hairy armadillo doesn't roll into a ball like its relatives — it wedges itself into soil so firmly that a predator cannot pull it out. Their carapace (shell) isn't bone; it's layers of leathery skin studded with bony plates that lock together like armour plates on a medieval knight. A jaguar's bite bounces off. They survive by becoming immovable.
• Unlike most armadillos that give birth to identical quadruplets, the large hairy armadillo has litters of 1 to 3 pups, each from a separate egg — a reproductive strategy so unusual among armoured mammals that scientists still debate why they abandoned the twin-birth pattern of their ancestors 60 million years ago.
