• Male screaming hairy armadillos stretch from 328 mm to 400 mm long, averaging 376 mm, while females range from 265 mm up to 419 mm with an average of 368 mm. Males tip the scales at 543 g to 1,329 g (average 860 g) and females sit between 257 g and 1,126 g (average 814 g).
• When winter rolls in, these armadillos bulk up by as much as 10 % body weight, adding a 1-2 cm thick layer of sub-cutaneous fat. The extra insulation lets them survive the chilly nights without drinking, because they can also concentrate urine to retain water. Together, the fat coat and water-saving kidneys illustrate a dual strategy for thriving in deserts where rain may fall as little as 200 mm a year.

• Reproduction is rapid: after a 60-75 day gestation, females give birth to two pups that weigh about 155 g. The newborns open their eyes in 16-30 days, are weaned by 50-60 days, and reach sexual maturity at nine months, allowing two litters each year.
• A single burrow entrance is often sealed when the armadillo is inside, and each tunnel can be 20 cm to 38 cm wide and stretch several metres long. The animal maintains a minimum home range of 3.4 ha (8.4 acres).
