• A marsupial the size of a rabbit has become Australia's accidental mycologist. Southern bettongs eat almost nothing but fungi — truffles, puffballs, cup fungi — and their digging for underground fruiting bodies can turn over 250 tonnes of soil per hectare per year. That constant churning aerates the soil, spreads fungal spores across the grassland, and creates micro-habitats for seeds. They're ecosystem engineers invisible to most, remaking the landscape one snout-poke at a time.
• Watch a southern bettong move and you're watching a living pogo stick. Their hind legs are massively over-built for a 1.5 kg animal, launching them into a bounding gait that looks almost comical—but it's an energy-efficient way to cover open grassland fast when predators appear. Once thought extinct in mainland Australia, a tiny population discovered in western Victoria in 1960 became the blueprint for the only free-ranging population that survives today.
• Female southern bettongs gestate for just 21 days and birth a joey the size of a grain of rice—around 0.3 grams. That infant climbs into the pouch alone and won't emerge for another 90 days. Multiple pregnancies per year are possible, yet populations remain fragile: fewer than 1,000 exist in the wild, confined to a handful of protected sites where fencing keeps out the feral cats and foxes that have erased them everywhere else.
• In the 1980s, biologists made a radical decision: introduce southern bettongs to offshore islands where no predators existed, gambling that an island could become a living insurance policy. It worked. Bruny Island in Tasmania now holds one of the largest wild populations on Earth. Yet the original mainland stronghold survives only because of constant predator control—a species kept alive by human intervention, forever.
• A southern bettong's night-time world is chemical—they navigate grasslands by smell as much as sight, following scent trails laid by other bettongs and reading the odour-map of fungi underground. They're solitary foragers who meet only to breed, each individual holding an invisible territory marked by faecal pellets. This solitary nature made them hard to study and easy to overlook, which is partly why their decline went unnoticed until they were almost gone.
