Fascinating facts about the Southern Bettong

• The eastern bettong can travel up to 1.5 km from its nest to reach feeding sites, a distance far greater than expected for such a diminutive marsupial. It makes these journeys at night, foraging for truffles, underground fungi, roots and tubers that form the bulk of its diet.
• The mainland subspecies of the eastern bettong disappeared in the 1920s after the red fox and European rabbit were introduced to Australia, with those predators driving the local population to extinction. Consequently only the Tasmanian subspecies remains, now the focus of conservation efforts.
• In 2012 a small group of eastern bettongs was reintroduced to the mainland at Canberra's Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary, and the release proved successful. The success prompted further releases using an on-site breeding programme that sourced individuals from the nearby Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve and from wild Tasmanian bettongs. This coordinated effort has expanded the species' presence beyond its original Tasmanian range.
• The eastern bettong's gestation lasts just 21 days, after which the newborn joey is transferred to the mother's pouch. It then remains protected inside the pouch for a further 105 days before emerging to the outside world. This short reproductive cycle is part of a continuous breeding strategy, allowing the species to produce offspring throughout the year. Such rapid turnover helps maintain population numbers despite predation pressures.
• The eastern bettong uses its curved, prehensile tail like a living tool, dragging bundles of nesting material to its shelter. It constructs domed nests from densely woven grass, leaves and shredded bark, placing them in shallow depressions or beneath fallen logs and vegetation. Each nest is occupied for only one or two nights before the animal moves on in search of food. This portable architecture supports its nocturnal lifestyle and frequent relocations.
