• A sloth bear can demolish a termite mound the size of a car in under an hour. They tear through hardened clay with claws longer than a grizzly's, then use their flexible lips and specialized teeth to hoover up insects at a rate of 4,000 termites per feeding session. Their stomach lining is thick enough to withstand stings and bites from soldier ants that would hospitalise most animals — a biological suit of armour built for raiding.
• Mother sloth bears carry their cubs on their backs for up to two years, long after they can walk — the only bear species that does this consistently. The cubs cling to her fur during forest movement, and this extended dependency means each mother raises only two or three young in her lifetime. It's a strategy that makes populations fragile: fewer births per female than almost any other large carnivore.
• When threatened, a sloth bear doesn't run. Instead it rises on hind legs, swings its long arms in wide arcs, and charges straight at the threat — including tigers and leopards. Fewer than 20,000 remain scattered across the subcontinent, making them rarer than many celebrated endangered species most people have never heard of.
