• A tail that works like a fifth limb — the western ring-tailed possum's prehensile tail is so strong it can support the animal's entire 2–3 kg body weight while it feeds, freeing both front paws to grab leaves 15 metres up in the canopy. The tail's hairless tip has friction ridges like human fingerprints, giving it grip even on wet bark. This design lets it harvest food from branches too thin for its body to balance on — a feeding strategy no other Australian marsupial can match.
• Fewer than 50 individuals remain in the wild, making the western ring-tailed possum one of Australia's most critically endangered mammals. The last confirmed sighting in its native range was in 1994; only a single population survives in a small corner of southwest Western Australia. Conservation efforts now depend entirely on protecting fragmented patches of old-growth eucalyptus forest — if one wildfire hits the wrong hectare, an entire lineage vanishes.
• It digests leaves most other animals find toxic — like a koala, the western ring-tailed possum has a specialised caecum (a pouch-like section of the intestine) where gut bacteria break down tough, poisonous eucalyptus leaves into usable nutrition. This allows it to survive on food sources that would starve a generalised mammal, but it also locks the possum into dependence on intact eucalyptus woodland — it cannot adapt to forest fragments without its host trees.
• It builds a leaf nest the size of a football called a drey, woven from bark strips and leaves in the fork of a tree, where up to four individuals huddle together to survive winter. These dreys are so well-insulated that possums can lower their body temperature and enter torpor — a hibernation-like state that cuts energy use in half during cold months. A single possum may build 2–5 dreys within its home range as backup shelters.
• Nocturnal and almost silent, the western ring-tailed possum leaves almost no trace of its existence — no loud calls, no visible diurnal activity, barely any scat in predictable places. This secretiveness made it invisible to science until 1910, and it disappeared from human knowledge almost as quickly as it entered. That invisibility is now its curse: absence of evidence becomes evidence of extinction, making it impossible to know whether a few individuals survive in unlogged forest patches that have never been thoroughly surveyed.
