• A slender spreadwing's wings stay half-open even when it rests — a posture shared with only a handful of dragonfly species. Most dragonflies fold their wings flat or hold them perpendicular to their body, but spreadwings dangle theirs at a 45-degree angle, like a plane coming in for landing. This odd stance may help them warm up faster in cool marshes where they hunt.
• At 3–4 centimetres long, a slender spreadwing is built to hunt in the dense vegetation of ponds and marshes where larger dragonflies can't manoeuvre. Their narrow abdomen and wire-thin legs let them slip between cattail stems and hover in spaces barely wider than a pencil. This niche has kept them common across eastern North America for millions of years while flashier dragonflies come and go.
• Male slender spreadwings guard the same square metre of marsh for weeks, returning to the exact same perch each morning. They patrol this territory for females and intruding males with the precision of a security guard on a fixed route. Lose the perch and they may never find another — territoriality this strict means a healthy marsh can support only dozens where you might expect hundreds.
• A slender spreadwing spends up to two years underwater as a nymph — longer than many dragonfly species — eating mosquito larvae and other aquatic insects in a constant hunt. The nymph breathes through gills in its rectal chamber and can jet backwards by squirting water from its abdomen. This long larval stage means the adults that emerge have survived some of the harshest conditions a pond can throw at them.
• Slender spreadwings mate while flying, locked together in the air in a formation called a tandem, with the male clutching the female behind her head. She then flies to the water's edge alone and carefully taps her abdomen against the surface to lay eggs — sometimes dozens of times — while staying alert for predators. This split labour may reduce the risk that both parents get spotted and eaten at the moment when they're most vulnerable.
