• A dragonfly the size of your thumb flies backwards, sideways, and straight up without rotating its body — the calico pennant can shift direction mid-air faster than a hummingbird, its four wings working in pairs, two beating 30 times per second while the other two beat out of sync. This makes it a living fighter jet above marshes from Maine to Florida, able to pluck mosquitoes from the air without slowing down.
• The males wear a patchwork of crimson and black like stained glass, the females a sombre tan — but the pattern isn't vanity. These calico markings absorb and reflect heat differently, turning the dragonfly into a living thermometer that regulates its body temperature by tilting toward or away from the sun, essential for staying active in the cool mornings of eastern wetlands.
• Watch a male calico pennant during breeding season and you'll see him patrol the same 20 metres of marsh edge for hours, returning to the exact same perch dozens of times a day. He's memorised his territory like a map, and can spot a rival from 50 metres away — his enormous compound eyes see ultraviolet light and can track a moving insect while his head stays completely still.
• Calico pennants lay eggs on floating vegetation, and the nymphs live underwater for a full year hunting smaller insects with a hydraulic jaw that shoots out faster than human reflexes can track. The transformation from aquatic ambush predator to aerial hunter is one of nature's most violent metamorphoses — the adult crawls out of the water, its exoskeleton splits down the back, and within hours it's hunting the very insects its younger self hunted from below.
