• The Ditch Jewel's eyes cover almost its entire head, giving it a 360-degree view of the world. Those aren't simple eyes either: they contain roughly 30,000 individual lenses packed into each bulging sphere, allowing it to see ultraviolet light, polarised light, and movement as slow as a human heartbeat. It processes all that visual data in a brain the size of a sesame seed.
• Males patrol the same 2-metre stretch of ditch water every single day for weeks, memorising every reed, pebble, and current. When a female arrives, the male must perform an instant aerial identity check — wrong species, and he's wasted energy; right species, and he has seconds to convince her to mate before a rival male chases her away. These dragonflies spend their entire adult lives in an area smaller than a garden shed.
