• A slaty skimmer can rotate each eye independently while its body stays still — giving it a 360-degree view of the sky without turning its head. This split-brain vision lets it track prey above while watching for predators below, all at once. • In less than a tenth of a second, a slaty skimmer accelerates from a hover to 30 miles per hour and pivots 90 degrees mid-air.
