• An eastern barn owl can hear a mouse moving under 30 centimetres of snow — or leaf litter — without seeing it. Their ear openings sit at slightly different heights on their skull, letting their brain triangulate sound in 3D space with such precision they can strike in total darkness and miss by less than a centimetre. This asymmetrical hearing gives them a hunting advantage that daylight predators can never match.
