• Five recognized subspecies of the grey shrikethrush spread across the continent, each originally described as a separate species. C. h. brunnea, named by Gould in 1841, lives in northern Australia and Melville Island; C. h. superciliosa, described by Masters in 1876, occupies eastern New Guinea, Torres Strait islands and north-eastern Australia; C. h. harmonica, recorded by Latham in 1801, is found in eastern Australia; C. h. strigata, noted by Swainson in 1838, inhabits Tasmania and Bass Strait islands; and the western shrikethrush C. h. rufiventris, also by Gould in 1841, dwells in western, southern and central Australia.
• Originally placed in the genus Turdus, the grey shrikethrush's taxonomic journey reflects shifting scientific understanding. Early ornithologists grouped it with true thrushes, but later studies moved it to Colluricincla, aligning it with shrike-thrushes.
• At just about 24 cm (9.4 in) long, the grey shrikethrush. it thrives in most Australian habitats except the driest inland deserts and even reaches New Guinea.
