• A sidewinder leaves no footprints — it moves sideways across hot sand at 3 metres per second by throwing loops of its body ahead like a whip, with only two points of contact touching the ground at any moment. This J-shaped locomotion lets it sprint across sand that would bog down a straight-moving snake, and minimizes contact with ground that can exceed 60°C. • The sidewinder's heat sensors are so precise they can detect a mouse-sized prey warmer than the air by just 0.003 degrees Celsius — like feeling someone breathing in a stadium full of people. These pits run along the jaw like a second pair of eyes, creating a thermal image the snake's brain stitches together in real time. A rodent moving in absolute darkness has no advantage.
• Sidewinders shed their skin every 4 to 6 weeks, more frequently than most snakes, because desert living wears them out — sand abrasion, sun damage, and the constant thermoregulation grind.
