• Typical wild individuals measure between 2.5 and 3.5 feet (76-107 cm) in length, but the species can exceed that size under favourable conditions. On Isla Ángel de la Guarda in Baja California, snakes have been recorded at 78 inches, roughly two metres, making them far larger than the average. Those island giants illustrate the species' capacity for exceptional growth when resources and habitat allow.
• Among snakes, the California kingsnake produces the strongest constriction relative to its body size, a trait that gives it a decisive advantage over prey. This powerful grip is especially useful when tackling other reptiles, which require less oxygen to survive an attack than mammals.
• The "king" moniker comes from the snake's habit of hunting and swallowing other snakes, including venomous rattlesnakes, to which it is naturally resistant. As opportunistic feeders, they also take rodents, birds, and various amphibians and reptiles when available. Their resistance to rattlesnake venom allows them to prey on dangerous species without being harmed. This dietary flexibility helps the California kingsnake thrive in many habitats across its range.
• When threatened they coil into a ball, hiss and shake their tail, producing a rattlesnake-like buzz. This defensive posture hides the head while the rattling sound can startle predators. If the snake feels further danger it may also bite and release a strong musky odor from its cloaca. Nervous individuals often twitch their tails as an additional warning signal.
• On Spain's Gran Canaria the species has become invasive, with numbers swelling to an estimated 20,000 individuals by 2014. The snakes preferentially occupy rocky or stony sites that provide good vegetation cover, allowing them to hide and hunt effectively. They also make frequent use of other invasive shrubs such as Opuntia dillenii and Cenchrus setaceus, further integrating into the altered habitat.
