Nidua Fringe-fingered Lizard

Fascinating facts about the Nidua Fringe-fingered Lizard

• At just 21 cm long, about the length of a school ruler, the Nidua fringe-fingered lizard carries a tail that makes up less than two-thirds of its body, and it never weighs more than a paperclip at 10 g, showing how evolution can pack survival tools into a pocket-size package.
• Unlike its cousins that wear a neat grid of belly scales, this lizard’s ventral scales fan out in diagonal rows from the belly’s center.
• When the sun scorches the dunes, the lizard darts into the nearest shallow sand burrow, whether it dug it or not, using these quick hideouts to escape both predators and the hottest hours, a behavior that turns the desert floor itself into a network of emergency shelters.
• Mating season kicks off in late winter; a territorial male guards the area around his burrow, courting females while fending off rivals, and the female then lays 3–6 elongated eggs that hatch between June and August, producing newborns only 7–8 cm long and weighing about 0.5 g, a dramatic size jump from egg to tiny lizard.
• Once common from the dunes of the western Negev to the sands of the southern Coastal Plain in Israel, the species has been edged out of former northern habitats like Herzliya by urban sprawl, underscoring how quickly human development can rewrite a desert dweller’s map.
