• A sidewinder leaves J-shaped tracks across the sand—but it's not wandering randomly. Each loop is a physics solution: by moving sideways instead of forward, the snake touches only two short sections of hot desert ground at a time, cutting its skin temperature exposure by up to 10 times compared to other snakes. Watch one move and you're watching a creature that has evolved to live on ground hot enough to cook an egg.
• The sidewinder's heat-sensing pits are positioned on its jaw like tiny infrared cameras, so precise they can detect a rodent's body heat from half a metre away in complete darkness. A hunting sidewinder coils in an S-shape, then strikes at speeds up to 4 metres per second—fast enough that a mouse has no time to react. The venom works in seconds, and the snake simply waits for the prey to stop moving before eating.
• At less than 60 centimetres long, a sidewinder is one of North America's smallest venomous snakes, yet it hunts creatures that would be a meal for a snake twice its size.
