• At 417 kilograms and 150 centimetres long, the African spurred tortoise is the heaviest land tortoise on Earth — heavier than a baby elephant. Those spurs on their thighs aren't weapons; they're shovels. Males use them to dig burrows up to 30 metres long, creating underground air-conditioned bunkers where temperatures stay 15 degrees cooler than the blazing Sahel surface. One tortoise's burrow becomes shelter for dozens of other animals during the scorching season.
• A spurred tortoise can live 70 years in the wild and over 100 in captivity — old enough to outlive the humans who adopt them as hatchlings. Some tortoise keepers have passed theirs to their grandchildren. They grow continuously throughout their lives, gaining 5 to 10 kilograms per decade, which means your childhood pet becomes a half-tonne barnacle your adult self can no longer move.
