Fascinating facts about the Siberian Chipmunk

• Between 1960 and 1980 South Korea shipped more than 200,000 Siberian chipmunks to Europe as pets, and many were later released. Yet the species spreads at a snail's pace, only 200 to 250 m (660 to 820 ft) each year, so even after decades only 22 separate populations were recorded across the continent in 2009, with 11 of those in France. Their sluggish dispersal curbs the risk of rapid invasions.
• In winter Siberian chipmunks dig burrows up to 2.5 m (8 ft 2 in) long and 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in) deep, carving out nest chambers, storage rooms, and waste pits. Inside, they stash a staggering 3-4 kg (6.6-8.8 lb) of pine seeds, insects and other foods to last until they emerge in April or May. This massive cache relative to their 50-gram body weight illustrates how crucial hoarding is for survival in harsh sub-arctic climates.
• After hibernating, breeding kicks off in mid-April and each female can produce three to eight pups after a 28- to 35-day gestation. Newborns weigh only 3-5 g, are blind and naked, and open their eyes 20-25 days later. By three to four months they hit adult body mass, and at nine months both sexes are sexually mature.
• Siberian chipmunks can carry the Lyme-disease bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. A study in a Paris park found that, compared with native bank voles and wood mice, these chipmunks harboured a much higher infection load. Because they host more infected questing nymph ticks, they may raise the risk of Lyme disease transmission to humans in areas where they have become established.
• At just 18-25 cm long, about a third of that length is tail, Siberian chipmunks weigh only 50-150 g. Their tiny frame limits how long they can live: wild individuals survive just two to five years, while those kept in captivity can reach a decade.
