• A ring-tailed lemur's tail is longer than its entire body — up to 60 centimetres of black-and-white striped fur that acts like a flag, a balance beam, and a social antenna all at once. When troops move through the forest, mothers hold their tails straight up so infants can spot them in the chaos. The stripes are so distinct that researchers can identify individual lemurs by tail patterns alone, like reading a barcode.
• Female ring-tailed lemurs run every troop they live in — a radical matriarchy where mothers eat first, pick the best sleeping spots, and can physically overpower males twice their size. This flips the mammal script entirely: only 20 percent of primates give females this kind of authority. Scientists think the arrangement evolved because Madagascar's seasonal droughts made food so scarce that breeding females needed the nutritional edge to survive.

In 2021 researchers discovered this isn't just comfort: the posture positions their sensitive inner arms — their thinnest-skinned body parts — directly into the strongest morning rays.
• They are 'stink-fighters' — males have scent glands on their wrists and tails that they rub on branches to mark territory, but they also drag their tails across these glands and then hurl them at rivals during disputes, creating a smell-based duel. The stronger the stink, the higher the male's rank.
