Fascinating facts about the Sea Otter

• A sea otter's fur has 1 million hairs per square inch — denser than any other animal on Earth, roughly 15 times thicker than human head hair. Unlike whales and seals, they have zero blubber, so this coat is their only insulation in water that hovers around 10°C. When their fur gets damaged, they die of hypothermia within hours. That's why sea otters spend 40% of their waking hours grooming: they're not preening, they're surviving.
• Sea otters are one of the few animals that use tools to hunt, cracking open clams and sea urchins with rocks they carry in a pouch of loose skin. They memorise the shape, weight, and texture of their favourite tool rock and will dive 60 metres to retrieve it if they lose it. A single otter might use the same rock for 20 years, the way a carpenter keeps a favourite hammer.
• When sea otters were hunted to near extinction for their fur—from 300,000 animals down to fewer than 1,000 by the 1910s—the ecosystems along the Pacific coast transformed catastrophically. Without otters to eat sea urchins, the urchins exploded in population and grazed kelp forests down to bare rock, destroying nurseries for fish, crab, and lobster larvae. The otter's return has reversed this collapse: one otter eats 25% of its body weight in food every day, controlling the entire food chain below it.
• A newborn sea otter pup is so buoyant from its dense fur that it cannot dive for its first few months and floats like a cork. The mother must teach it to hunt, carrying dead crabs to her pup and gradually moving to injured, then live prey—a training period that lasts 6 to 8 months. Pups that lose their mothers before they learn to forage have almost zero chance of survival.
• Sea otters can hold their breath for up to 5 minutes and dive repeatedly to 80 metres, yet their heart rate barely changes during dives—a mammalian reflex so powerful their heart can drop to just 50 beats per minute underwater. Their spleen swells before a dive, releasing oxygenated blood cells into circulation: a living oxygen tank that lets them hunt on the seafloor longer than their lung capacity alone would allow.
