• A sand viper can sense the body heat of a mouse buried 10 centimetres underground through infrared pits along its jaw — a living thermal imaging system that lets it hunt in absolute darkness. It strikes so fast (less than 0.2 seconds) that prey never see it coming. This heat-seeking precision explains why it thrives where other predators fail: the desert at night.
• The sand viper's horn is made from modified scales stacked into a spike that juts from its snout like a tiny unicorn's tusk. Scientists still debate its purpose — it might help the snake burrow through loose sand, or it could be a sexual signal that males with bigger horns use to attract mates.
