Rough-tailed Gecko

Fascinating facts about the Rough-tailed Gecko

• It was first described in 1827, showing how early naturalists laid the groundwork for modern reptile taxonomy.
• The species spans three continents, living in West Asia, South Asia and parts of North Africa.
• A population that arrived on commercial shipping docks has now bred successfully in Galveston, Texas, proving that even a ground-dwelling gecko can establish a foothold far from its native range. This shows how global trade can unintentionally move tiny reptiles across oceans.
• Although once reported in Eritrea, the gecko’s status there is listed as possibly extinct, highlighting how uncertain historical records can be for remote regions. It underscores the need for fresh surveys to confirm where species truly persist.
• Cyrtopodion basoglui, described in 1982, was later folded into Cyrtopodion scabrum because the older 1827 name has priority, demonstrating the rule that the earliest valid name wins in scientific naming. This principle keeps the naming system orderly despite dozens of later discoveries.
