• A reef manta ray's brain is the largest of any fish, relative to body size—proportionally bigger than a great white shark's. They recognise individual humans by face, remember divers across years, and have been observed playing with objects just for pleasure. This intelligence in a creature that eats only microscopic plankton suggests their mind evolved not to hunt, but to navigate a complex reef and process social relationships.
• Manta rays have wing-like fins that span up to 5.5 metres tip to tip—wider than a giraffe is tall. They don't flap them like birds; instead, they ripple them in waves, creating vortices that funnel plankton directly into their mouths. A single manta can filter 60,000 litres of seawater in one hour, consuming enough krill to gain 1 kg of body weight daily.
