• A red-breasted merganser can dive to 40 metres in pursuit of fish, yet its eyes contain a special lens that shifts shape underwater to track prey at speeds up to 25 km/h. Most diving ducks max out at half that depth — this bird hunts like a submarine with a sniper scope.
